Statement
Negotiating between the distinct and indistinct, a pixelated gradient undermines hierarchies yet defines clear zones of positive and negative, open space and housing. Housing reaches into green spaces while "fingers" of a sustainable landscape extend into the built environment.
Despite housing types defined by socio-economics, and standardized construction, the infinite variation of the 4x8 module unifies the overall design and offers uniqueness within a cohesive whole. This challenges distinctions between market rate and subsidized housing.
Similarly, residual open space becomes a shared commodity for playspace, and recreation in an ecologically responsible site. Outdoor space is also found with each housing unit: ground level patios, upper level balconies, and roof-top terraces.
Storefronts cater to the adjacent community and provide space for neighborhood services. Like the housing units, standard commercial construction is customized through the creative use of a common building material. Here, embossed CMU blocks make the mundane beautiful.
"Green Architecture" is realized through collecting and reusing rainwater runoff, supplying abundant natural daylighting, and using renewable energy (photovoltaic panels and geothermal power). The units employ ecologically responsible materials.
Every unit uses an offset core that houses roof-top vegetation, a rainwater tank, and mechanical systems. The specific, dual-anlged, shed roof channels water into the core and provides an optimal angle for solar collection. It gives an occupiable clerestory with extensive views, vertical ventilation, and flexible living space. Natural ventilation is augmented by large operable windows and high ceilings.
The typical seriousness of providing dignified, subsidized housing gives way to a geometric playfulness that offers Sunrise Park a renewed vibrancy.
